Years of physical damage from shifting pontoon boat anchors and clearing areas for seaweed farming devastated this local ecosystem, causing fish populations to plummet. Recognizing the crisis, the local community stepped up to bring the reef back to life. These dedicated replanting efforts have already restored more than 1km of coral, with even more expansion planned. Today, the returned sections of the reef are making a spectacular comeback, once again thriving with colorful fish.

The reefs of Nusa Penida sit in a deep channel where cold upwelling helps protect the corals from ocean warming. We're also partnering with Ocean Gardener, using their thermoresilient donor coral stock to strengthen the reef's long-term odds. This area may be one of the last frontiers for coral in a warming ocean.
The corals provide habitat for fish and other marine life. We hope to quantify how much of that life has returned to the area as a result of our joint replanting efforts.

The corals are located in the shallow waters and just outside of the reef crest in a tiny fishing village Ped, north of Nusa Penida, Bali.

Established in 2016, we are a diverse team of biologists, divers and coral enthusiasts that drive to make change by restoring Indonesia’s degraded reef areas. By relying on our founder’s 25 years of coral farming experience, we have achieved great success rates in our coral restoration sites. We actively partner with local communities, hotels, resorts and dive shops to setup and deploy coral nurseries using our protocols. From these nurseries, we harvest donor coral to restore the surrounding reefs. Collectively with our partners, we have planted over 1 million corals. We offer tours for the public to learn about coral restoration and courses for people wanting more hands-on experience and stay to volunteer.

Reef restoration is usually invisible to donors. At Canopi, every coral you adopt is a real fragment being raised in a coral nursery in Nusa Penida, Indonesia — geotagged, photographed, and monitored underwater by the Ocean Gardener team. Surplus funds expand larger scale reef-planting campaigns across Bali.
